leader as steward

our church's young adult thursday small group is going through a series on leadership (produced by iv press). last night, the study was on being leader as steward. the passage that we read was from nehemiah 2 and we saw how nehemiah had a vision and plan for rebuilding israel and how we was able to delegate that plan and eventually execute and evaluate that vision.

this study actually went hand-in-hand with a previous study we had on leader as visionary, but it focused more on executing the vision that God places on our hearts. a couple of pitfalls that we learned in our study was that some leaders fail to trust others and become lone-rangers, some fail to count the cost and do things last minute, some fail to be trustworthy and drop the ball, and some fail to trust God.

i know for myself, this is something that i am still learning as i work in youth ministry. as i look back on my ministries, there are times when i have become the lone-ranger. i know how i want my ministry or activity to look like, so i just do everything myself instead of delegating. there have been other times when i plan an activity or event last minute and forget to count the cost or plan ahead. and there are times when i start something, but don't follow through. i guess the good thing is that i do tend to trust God in all things, but there are definitely areas i need to work as i strive to be the leader that God wants me to be.

warriors/clippers recap

this past saturday, i got to see the warriors/clippers game live at the staples center. my gf and i headed out to downtown LA early for dinner and went to lawry's carvery. as we were waiting to cross the street, i heard a voice that sounded like the basketball guy, bill simmons. it looked kinda like him from the back, but i was too chicken to go up and ask him. but that was exciting to think that i could have been next to a semi-celebrity. haha. anyway at lawyr's carvery, i ordered their roast beef dip, which was pretty good. a bit on the pricey side, but the sandwich was tasty and it came with a side of chips. afterwards, we walked around a bit and then sat in front of the oscar de la hoya statue and waited for my friends to come by with the tickets.

my friend got a good deal on the tickets, so we got to sit in the lower section (sec 107, row 8) behind the backboard. it was cool to see the players up close, but at the same time, being right behind the basket was an odd angle too. not only that, but there were three large guys who sat right in front of us which also blocked some of our view. still, it was impressive to see these nba players at such a close range.

the game itself was an exciting one. these two young run-and-gun teams got up and down the court quickly and there were definitely some highlights. unfortunately for me as a warriors fan, most of the highlights were from the clippers side. two alley-oop dunks to blake griffin and another one to deandre jordan. also jordan swatting every drive the warriors took to the tin.

the frustrating thing is that you know leapers like to leap and so the warriors need to drive and dish off which they didn't do enough. and when they did, biedrins or lee or udoh couldn't catch it cleanly and then would rush their shots. soon enough, the warriors started settling for 3-pointers (like they tend to do) and it was live or die by the three. the warriors soon fell behind big and even though they kept chipping away and getting close to 4 to 2 points, the clippers would call a timeout and then build that lead back up. it just didn't seem like the warriors could pull it off.

sure enough, the warriors fought all the way back to tie the game with less than 2 minutes left, but gave up a 3 pointer by blake (with 2 seconds left on the shot clock no less) and then after making two free throws on the other end and fouling, not able to box out on a missed free throw by randy foye. that was the dagger...

all-in-all it was a fun game because it came down to the wire, but it was frustrating as a warriors fan. they gave up way too many offensive rebounds and a big reason was because they went to the zone defense. i didn't really like that move, but the clippers weren't really hitting their outside shots and they did cut the lead, so i guess it kinda worked. offensively, the warriors just had a lot of one-on-one plays and relying on contested jump shots which isn't going to cut it.

oh yea... quick side-note. my friend and i were commenting how crazy it is that one person (blake griffin) has been able to change the culture of a basketball team. the staples center was packed out (all the way to the nose-bleed seats) all because of blake. he has single-handedly made this ball club relevant again. my gf, who doesn't really care or follow basketball, was impressed with blake. she kept saying how easy he made things look. and every time he would score, she would turn to me and clap the free thunder sticks they handed out to us in my face just to spite me. haha... also my friend's friend who also went with us (who is a lakers fan) said it was weird because he's so used to laughing at the clippers that he didn't know what to feel... that's what one guy has done for this franchise.

anyway, that was my warriors/clippers experience. a fun, but frustrating night.
